The FE Rating: Family Entertainment
A number of years ago when I had my former site, Videos For The Family—now Family Films Productions—I was thinking about family entertainment and what would happen if an additional rating like G, PG, PG-13, etc., were to come into existence at some point. I came up with an original idea about a new rating that could go into effect for approved films that would meet the guidelines for a proposed Family Entertainment rating for exciting movies and films that are out there.
For example, one of the most well-known classic films, "The Wizard of Oz," was always said to be rated G. Then, as time went by into a new generation, the film that was always known as a classic film and a great family classic movie turned into an official PG rating. All because of the scenes in the film with the Wicked Witch of the West. Even at that point when it happened, I still always felt that that movie should never have been turned into a PG rating. We cannot go back, but we can always go forward. For me, and I am sure many others across America and abroad, it deserves an FE rating as well. Others that I think deserve that would be many well-known classic Disney films, like "Old Yeller" and "Mary Poppins." I think of others, too, like animated movies such as "Charlotte's Web" or "Felix The Cat," and so many others that could be given this FE rating.
What the FE Rating would mean and stand for
FE — Family Entertainment. The Family Entertainment rating would consist of the following to meet the guidelines for the rating:
The film would be free of all inappropriate language.
The film would have some kind of lesson or moral to the overall story, and it must be clearly evident.
No inappropriate scenes.
It must be a film that a family can watch together regardless of age.
If a film meets all of the above but still has a curse word, depending on the word and the context it was said in, then that film could still be considered to have an F-E rating by a case by case basis.
